Neuroscientist Ahmed Moustafa, Ph.D., spent three months in Israel observing methodology of brain research for Parkinson’s disease at the Hadassah-Hebrew University School of Medicine and training students in conducting research at the Arab Al-Quds University in East Jerusalem. “It is sad,” he says, “that so many people do not benefit from Israel’s amazing, top-quality research because they are unaware of it and think of Israel as simply a political entity.”

Clinical Psychologist Ben Sedley, Hadassah New Zealand Valda Knight Memorial Scholarship recipient for 2009, returned from his clinical experience at the Hadassah Medical Center “impressed by the clear procedures put into place following a traumatic event, whether a terrorist attack or motor vehicle accident.” He also admired “the staff’s ability to work effectively with children and young people from so many different ethnicities and backgrounds.”

Macedonia’s Minister of Health, Bujar Osmani, traveled to Jerusalem in November to sign a cooperative agreement with Israeli Deputy Health Minister, Rabbi Yaakov Litzman, to enhance exchange of information between Israel and Macedonia in the fields of health care and medical science.

The United Kingdom’s Conservative Friends of Israel and Labor Friends of Israel both experienced a comprehensive visit to the Hadassah Medical Center this September, where they were briefed about the Israeli health care system, healing and research at Hadassah, and our Medical Center’s pivotal role as a bridge to peace through medicine.

During a trip to Israel celebrating two granddaughter’s Bat Mitzvahs, Latin American B’nai Brith President, Leon Birbragher (left) of Colombia, visited Hadassah Hospital-Ein Kerem and met with its director, Dr. Yuval Weiss. Dr. Weiss briefed Mr. Birbragher, a biochemist, on Hadassah’s leading role in research, including its pioneering work with embryonic stem cells. He is pictured here with Ron Krumer, Director of External Relations for the Hadassah Medical Center, who orchestrated the visit and accompanied him during his tour. Mr. Birbragher found a common denominator for the things he witnessed at Hadassah, explains Mr. Krumer: “preparedness”—for terror, mass casualty events, the next 50 years of hospitalization, and for technology. Mr. Birbragher’s visit was initiated and facilitated by Ethel Fainstein, Hadassah International Director for Latin America.

Hannah Shabathai, Hadassah’s Main Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, addressed the 12th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council on September 29, showcasing the Hadassah Medical Center as an oasis of peace.

Government officials and health professionals from Rwanda and Uganda recently visited Hadassah Hospital-Ein Kerem and met with Prof. Rosa Gofin, Director of the Mother and Child Health Unit and the Community Medicine and Health Promotion Unit, Hadassah-Hebrew University Braun School of Public Health and Community Medicine. Having expressed a particular interest in focusing on public health and infant mortality, the participants also were taken to the Judy and Sidney Swartz Center for Emergency Medicine’s Trauma Unit, Charlotte R. Bloomberg Mother and Child Center, and Hadassah’s Department of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology.
