Hadassah International Welcomes Prof. Stuart Stanton As Chair of Hadassah UK
Prof. Stuart Stanton, whose medical career as a urogynecologist spans decades and continents, has taken on the Chair of Hadassah United Kingdom. He follows Guilda Shamash, who held the position for 11 years.
Prof. Stanton, President of the British Society of Urogynecology and a physician in private practice, has had close ties to the Hadassah Medical Center for four decades. In 1995, he met Prof. Neri Laufer, head of Hadassah’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, who asked him to lecture and perform operations at Hadassah on a regular basis to share his expertise in urogynecological conditions. Prof. Stanton graciously accepted the role of Visiting Professor and more recently has begun traveling to Hadassah every three months to teach, consult, and perform operations on women with urogynecological disorders.
“HMO is a center of excellence, with a worldwide reputation in clinical care and research,” Dr. Stanton says. “It is also a major center for training doctors, nurses, and paramedics. The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology has a special reputation in the field of fertility and is well represented in the other disciplines of obstetrics and gynecology, namely fetal and maternal health, gynecological oncology, and reproductive medicine. I have always regarded it as an honor that I am accepted there as an Honorary Visiting Professor and enjoy any contribution that I can make.”
Dr. Stanton has trained 20 Israeli urogynecologists. He is also the author of 13 textbooks and over 220 papers on gynecology and urogynecology.
Prof. Stanton has served as a professor of urogynecology and pelvic floor reconstruction, as well as consultant at St. George’s Hospital in London, where he was director of the Urogynecology Department from 1984-2003. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and England, a Fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of England, an Honorary Fellow at the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and an Honorary Member of the Israel Urogynecology Association.
Prof. Stanton previously served Hadassah UK as a trustee. “My vision for Hadassah UK,” he relates, “is to increase our fundraising efforts for Hadassah and promote Hadassah’s medical profile--to record the achievements of Hadassah and Israeli medicine as a whole.” Prof. Stanton will be speaking about his involvement in Hadassah International during the Hadassah Medical Organization session at Hadassah America’s convention this July in Florida.
The father of five children, Prof. Stanton is married to a forensic psychologist and enjoys opera, European and Israeli literature, and tennis.
