Hadassah Grieves Over Tragic Loss of Canadian Hadassah-WIZO President Terry Schwarzfeld

It is with heartfelt sadness that we inform you of Canadian Hadassah-WIZO (CHW) National President Terry Schwarzfeld's passing in Ottawa this morning. Collectively, our thoughts and prayers are with her husband, Steve; her sons, Adam, Simon, and David; her daughter-in-law, Luana; and her grandson, Benjamin.
Terry and her daughter-in-law, Luana, were the victims of an assault on February 28th while vacationing in Barbados with their family. Terry remained in critical condition after she and Luana were robbed and beaten over the head with a piece of wood by a man on an isolated stretch of beach. Luana was released from the Barbados hospital and is recovering; sadly, Terry never regained consciousness.

Terry was elected as the 20th National President at CHW's 39th National Convention in Calgary, November 2008. Over the past few months, Terry had been busy with all aspects of her new administration. Terry's strength was in project organization, administration, and leadership. It was Terry's hope, over her three-year term, to concentrate on highlighting CHW's vision and commitment to Children, Healthcare and Women's programs in Israel, while augmenting communication, fundraising and membership. Further, Terry was focused on modernizing CHW's governance structure.

Terry brought much experience to CHW from numerous boards as a director, officer, and senior staff member. As a long-time member and leader within CHW, she had been a dedicated volunteer for over 30 years with various not-for-profit and charitable organizations. Recently retired, Terry served as Executive Director at the Agudath Israel Congregation in Ottawa.

Born in Regina, to a family for whom Israel played an integral role, her mother and grandmother were both CHW members. Terry held a Master of Science degree from CarletonUniversity and a Bachelor of Science from the University of British Columbia. She received the Ontario Volunteer Service Award for both five and ten-year service. Over the course of her involvement with CHW, Terry also received numerous awards, most notably the Women of Achievement Award in 2007.

"Hadassah International is devastatedby this horrible, fatal attack and loss of Terry Schwarzfeld, a most passionate and professional president of Canadian Hadassah-WIZO," notes Helaine Ohayon, Coordinator of Hadassah International."When she visited Hadassah Headquarters in New York last month, she shared her multifaceted vision to improve the lives of women and children both in Canada and in Israel. We all deeply mourn her loss."

Terry was a true Woman of Valour, a devoted wife and mother, and proud grandmother to Benjamin.
